Day that changed us

There are times in our life when we remember exactly where we were when a specific world event took place. I remember where I was when they announced Elvis died (I was in my parents driveway and was listening to the radio). I know where I was when the OJ Simpson verdict was read (I was driving in my car going across the Jemseg bridge).

The one event I remember most vividly was when the twin towers were being crashed into by terrorists in 2001. I was in the basement of a good friends house watching the television when it came through with live shots. As a Christian it was hard to take but I still had hope, but for my friend who was not a believer he had tremendous fear. I remember our conversation well.

It was a life changing day for many of us. For those of us in North America it changed the way we view a lot of things. For a short time it had a great impact but overtime we have become complacent again about things.

The greatest event in the history of the world happened about 1980 years ago. I wasn't there obviously but it still has had a huge impact on my life. That was the day Jesus Christ chose to willingly give his life up for mine. Can you imagine that day? That day was filled with incredible emotion for those who were at the scene. They saw their friend, their son, their brother and their Messiah being brutally crucified. While they experienced this horror, the guards/soldiers thought this was the biggest farce ever. They could care less what was happening, until..

Read this powerful account from Matthew 27:50-54

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!" (NIV)

Brothers and sisters because of this day in history we have hope. When the veil in the temple was torn in two, we all had the right to then inter into the holy of holies and have direct fellowship with our King. Think about that, it is powerful.

How can we best remember those hurt and senselessly killed on 9/11? Pray for their families, their children. They were all someones friend or family member. We pray to a living God who really cares.
