Humility

Cindy Klaussen and I after her interview

What does humility look like? How would we describe it? I think one way to describe it would be to consider ourselves in comparison to Christ.

I met someone who truly exemplified humility, Her name is Cindy Klaussen. For those of you that do not follow sport,s she is a Canadian girl that has won the most gold medals in Canadian winter Olympics history. Cindy has won 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

I along with a couple of other chaplains were doing our rounds in the city and arrived at Coastal Church in the downtown area. We were informed that Cindy Klaussen was going to be interviewed upstairs in the church in about three minutes, and that we were more than welcome to sit in. It turned out that there were only about 40 people there to see her.

She walked in and sat down and right away you could tell that she was a special lady. As the interviewer asked her questions, she answered them with such humility. She always talked about how God has changed her life and how her relationship with Christ gave her strength each day.

She was asked about all the medals she won and she talked about how her greatest joy was not medals, but knowing Christ. In fact the interviewer asked her about standing on the podium and receiving her gold medals and being a hero to so many Canadians, and how that made her feel. I was sitting one row from her and I could see her eyes begin to tear up. Beautiful!!!

Once she finished the interview she came off the platform and talked to the people there. I had an opportunity to thank her for being such a role model for so many young ladies. I told her that I was a youth pastor and I appreciated her for being so real and for sharing her faith in God.

She was so gracious. I was amazed by Cindy. She could have been arrogant and could have focused on all her talents and gifts. She could have showed up with all her medals around her neck, including her gold medal from the last Olympics but she didn't. Cindy Klaussen showed up, clothed in humility.

True humility is giving God the glory in all things. It is not about us, it is all about Him!!!
